| Obverse description | Light-blue underprint with black intaglio letterpress inscriptions and red seals; group and serial numbers in black. A radiant sun motif surmounts the design, with repeating vertical Chinese seal script inscriptions reading 五圓 alternating with the numerals 5 and YEN across the field; the central cartouche carries a vertical penalty text in regular script, enclosed within fine guilloche work. Corner medallions in the form of five-petal flower guilloche panels carry the denomination in Western numerals and Chinese seal script, while the frame border is filled with a scrolling floral vine alternating with Fundō weight motifs enclosing vertical seal-script inscriptions; the seal of the Governor of the Bank of Japan and the seal of the Director of the Document Department — the latter bearing dragons flanking a clerical-script inscription — appear at their respective positions. |
