Obverse description The obverse depicts a detailed relief of Pyongyang's Taedong Gate (Taedongmun), a historic multi-tiered Korean pavilion gate rendered in fine architectural detail with sweeping eaves and stone foundations set against a landscaped background with stylised foliage. Two olive or laurel sprigs flank the central design at the lower left and right. The circular legend in Hangul script reads 조선민주주의인민공화국 (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) around the upper periphery. The denomination 2 원 (2 Won) appears in the lower field below the gate.

Additional information

North Korea's collector coinage program, run through the state-controlled Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation, has functioned primarily as a hard-currency earner since the 1970s — these pieces were never intended for domestic circulation and were sold abroad through intermediaries, often at prices bearing no relationship to face value. The 2015 aluminium issues fall squarely within that tradition.
