| Additional information |
The Freising Manuscripts, produced in the late 10th or early 11th century at the Diocese of Freising in Bavaria, are the oldest known written documents in a Slavic language using Latin script — and among the oldest surviving texts in any Slavic language at all. Bishop Abraham of Freising, under whose oversight the manuscripts are believed to have been compiled, presided over a diocese that held significant ecclesiastical authority over the Slovenian-speaking population of Carinthia and Styria. When Slovenia issued this coin three years after independence, the choice was deliberate: a claim to a literary and cultural heritage predating any modern political border.
The originals are held in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich.
