Beschrijving keerzijde A draped standing female figure, representing the Maid of Holland (Hollandse Maagd), occupies the full height of the field in three-quarter view. She leans with her right arm upon an ornately decorated pedestal or column supporting a Bible or book, symbolizing the Reformed faith, while her left hand raises a long spear or staff surmounted by a liberty cap. Her elaborate curled coiffure and classical drapery are rendered in fine baroque relief. The circular Latin legend HAC NITIMVR HANC TVEMVR runs along the periphery, meaning 'On her we lean, her we protect', enclosed within a milled border.

Aanvullende informatie

Piedforts were never intended for circulation. The Province of Holland struck them as presentation pieces — given to officials, foreign dignitaries, or used internally to verify die alignment and design quality before full production runs. A piedfort at 1.5× weight rather than the more conventional double-weight format is unusual; most Dutch piedforts of this period follow the 2× convention, making this intermediate striking atypical within the HPM series.

1692 placed Holland deep in the Nine Years' War, with extraordinary fiscal pressure on provincial treasuries funding William III's campaigns against Louis XIV.
