| 表面の説明 | Central field bears the national coat of arms of the Republic of Somaliland, depicting a balance scale surmounted by an eagle, with clasped hands below, all enclosed within a wreath of olive branches. An Arabic inscription appears above the arms. The date 2017 is divided across the lower portion of the wreath, with '20' to the left and '17' to the right. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF SOMALILAND' runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '5 SHILLINGS' is inscribed along the lower rim. The entire design is surrounded by a beaded border. |

Somaliland's ongoing status as an unrecognized state — self-declared independent from Somalia since 1991 but acknowledged by no UN member — means its coinage circulates domestically without ever achieving the international monetary standing of a recognized national issue. The Bank of Somaliland has leaned into wildlife series partly for this reason: collector appeal generates hard currency inflows that purely functional coinage would not.
The olive baboon, Papio anubis, takes its species name from the Egyptian god Anubis, noted by early naturalists who saw a resemblance between the dog-headed deity and the animal's elongated muzzle.
