Somaliland has issued collector-oriented wildlife series since the early 2000s, targeting the international numismatic market rather than domestic circulation — the territory's own economy runs largely on the Somaliland shilling, and these brass pieces were never intended as working currency. The Felis concolor designation is the outdated binomial for the puma; the species was reclassified to Puma concolor decades before this coin was struck, which makes the scientific name on the die already obsolete at the time of minting.
