Uganda's early post-independence coinage was largely ceremonial in ambition. These silver issues were produced for collectors rather than circulation, commissioned as the country's new central bank worked to establish monetary credibility following independence from Britain in 1962. The Bank of Uganda was itself only formally established in 1966, making this 1969–1970 issue one of the institution's earliest numismatic outputs.
KM#9 is occasionally confused with the base-metal circulation issues of the same denomination from this period — a different animal entirely in every respect.
