Obverse description Central field bears the Arms of Uganda, depicting a shield supported by two kob antelopes, with a crested crane atop the crest and a representation of the River Nile in the lower portion of the shield; a scroll below the shield carries the national motto FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY. The denomination numeral 5 appears prominently beneath the arms, with the date 1969 and a mint mark in the lower field. The curved legend FIVE SHILLINGS arcs along the left side of the coin within a beaded border.

Reverse description Two Grey Crowned Cranes (Balearica regulorum), the national bird of Uganda, are depicted within a raised inner circle: one bird stands erect in the right foreground displaying its characteristic golden crown plumes, while a second bird bows forward to the left. A scenic background features mountains, a lake with hippopotami, and birds in flight across the sky. Flanking the inner circle below are two small laurel sprigs, with the date 1969 centered between them. The curved legend BANK OF UGANDA arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border.
