Abbas II ruled the Safavid Empire from 1642 to 1666, a period of relative stability following the turbulence of his father Safi I's reign. The Shūshtar mint, situated in Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran, was one of the empire's secondary provincial mints — active intermittently and responsible for a notably uneven output. Coins struck there frequently show irregular flans and off-center strikes, a product of inconsistent local die-cutting rather than any central production failure.
The "Type C2" designation within Abbas II's coinage reflects the systematic reclassification work done by späteren scholars on Safavid mint taxonomy — distinctions that matter considerably when attributing provincial issues where mint signatures are partially legible.
