Manuel Pinto de Fonseca held the Grand Mastership longer than almost any other in the Order's history — from 1741 until his death in 1773, an unbroken 32-year tenure. That longevity means his coinage is comparatively plentiful within the Hospitaller series, yet the 5 Scudi denomination in gold remains a minor issue by volume. The Order's mint at Valletta operated on modest scale throughout the eighteenth century, producing coins as much for diplomatic gifting and treasury reserve as everyday exchange.
