| Descrição do anverso | Central device comprises the Sri Lanka national emblem, featuring the Sinhala lion passant holding a sword in its right forepaw, set within a circular medallion surrounded by a stylized sunburst and a wreath of petals. Below the central medallion rests a traditional Sinhalese pot of abundance (punkalas) flanked by petals and two cremation torches, all mounted on a stepped pedestal. A Dhamma Chakra (eight-spoked wheel of the Buddhist doctrine) surmounts the entire composition at the top. The field is plain and the coin is bordered by a raised denticulated rim. |

To the lower left of the numeral appears the denomination in Sinhala script (රුපියල් පහයි) and Tamil script (ஐந்து ரூபாய்), with the English legend FIVE RUPEES inscribed below. The country name is repeated around the periphery in Sinhala (ශ්රී ලංකා) at the top and Latin (SRI LANKA) to the right. The date of issue appears in the lower exergue. A denticulated border runs along the rim. |

Sri Lanka shifted to brass-plated steel for this denomination as raw material costs made solid brass increasingly uneconomical in the mid-2000s — a pattern seen across South and Southeast Asian mints during the same period. The magnetic property is the quickest field test distinguishing this issue from its non-magnetic brass predecessor, KM#148.2.
