Superimposed upon this ornamental device, the denomination in Sinhala script ('රැපියල් පහයි') is inscribed in two lines, with the date '1957' below in Arabic numerals. To the left of the inner border, the legend 'FIVE RUPEES' is inscribed vertically in Latin characters; to the right, the Tamil denomination 'ஐந்து ரூபாய்' appears vertically. Along the upper outer margin, the Sinhala inscription 'ශ්රී ලංකා' appears, while the lower margin carries 'බුද්ධ ජයන්ති' in Sinhala script, all separated by ornamental star devices.
