Below the numeral, the denomination is inscribed in three scripts arranged in horizontal lines: 'රුපියල් පහයි' in Sinhala, 'ஐந்து ரூபாய்' in Tamil, and 'FIVE RUPEES' in Latin script at the bottom. The entire design is framed by a distinctive indented decorative border running along the rim, consisting of a continuous pattern of rectangular notches, giving the coin a security-edge appearance on the reverse face. |

Sri Lanka's stainless steel 5 Rupee coin has been struck continuously since the mid-1990s with only minor design revisions, making the 2017 issue unremarkable from a production standpoint. KM#220 is among the most frequently encountered modern Sri Lankan coins in circulated grades, turning up in bulk lots with little variation between years.
