| Reverse description | The large numeral «5» occupies the centre of the note within an elaborate guilloche underprint, with ПЯТЬ above and РУБЛЕЙ to the right, and the numeral «5» repeated in each corner within acanthus-scroll vignettes. A two-line Cyrillic legal tender inscription below the central value states that the note is obligatory for circulation until exchanged for state credit bills, with the year 1918 set within a decorative cartouche beneath it. The Astrakhan Treasury issued its own emergency notes in 1918 as central authority collapsed across the Volga-Caspian region. These regional obligations were a direct consequence of the Bolshevik seizure of power disrupting the supply of Provisional Government and early Soviet currency to peripheral areas — local bodies simply printed what they needed to keep transactions moving.
Astrakhan held out as a contested city well into the Civil War period, changing hands between Red and White forces. Notes from this treasury were typically redeemed, repudiated, or destroyed in short order, which accounts for the relative scarcity of survivors across the entire S443 series.
