Ajman, smallest of the Trucial States, issued a flood of commemorative silver pieces in the late 1960s and early 1970s that were never intended for local circulation — they were struck for the international collector market, sold through dealers in Europe and North America. This Albert Luthuli piece is part of that pattern. Luthuli, the ANC president who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960, died in 1967 under house arrest near Groutville, South Africa, struck by a train on a bridge he crossed regularly.
