Additional information

Ajman, smallest of the Trucial States by both area and population, issued this coin in 1969 as part of a broader wave of commemorative and proof-quality issues that the Gulf sheikhdoms produced in the final years before UAE federation. These releases were never intended for domestic circulation — Ajman's actual economy ran on Gulf rupees and later the Qatar and Dubai riyal. They were collector-market products, sold largely to European and American numismatic dealers and marketed through intermediaries with little pretense otherwise.

The two-date format reflected a common device among Trucial State issues of the period, carrying both the Gregorian and Hijri years. KM#3.1 distinguishes this from at least one variant in the series.
