Fujairah was one of several Trucial States that briefly operated independent minting programs in the late 1960s before the formation of the UAE in 1971 ended that window entirely. Many of these issues were produced not for circulation but for sale to collectors and dealers in Europe, with limited relevance to the local economy. This piece commemorates the 1972 Munich Olympics despite being struck in 1969–70 — a prospective commemorative issued years ahead of the event, a practice common among the smaller Gulf states chasing philatelic and numismatic revenue.
The Munich Games themselves ended in tragedy with the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes and coaches by the Palestinian group Black September on September 5, 1972.
