Aanvullende informatie

Brazil's Olympic commemorative program for Rio 2016 was one of the largest in Games history, with the Banco Central do Brasil issuing an extended series across multiple metals and themes. This piece was struck in 2015 — a full year ahead of the Games — during a period when Brazil's domestic finances were deteriorating sharply, with the country entering a severe recession and President Dilma Rousseff facing the impeachment proceedings that would remove her from office before the torch was even lit.

The Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1984, was repurposed as the athletics venue — one of the more unusual facility adaptations in modern Olympic history.
