Brazil's Olympic commemorative program for Rio 2016 was one of the largest in Games history, with the Banco Central do Brasil issuing an extended series across multiple metals and themes. The Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1984, was repurposed as the athletics venue — one of the more unusual facility adaptations in modern Olympic history.
