Waterlow & Sons handled Guatemalan printing contracts through much of the mid-twentieth century, and this series reflects their mature production quality — tight intaglio work, reliable registration. The "2nd type" designation separates it from earlier Banco de Guatemala issues that shared broadly similar design architecture but differed in security specification and plate arrangement.

Waterlow's liquidation and absorption by De La Rue in 1961 effectively ended this contract. Notes dated toward the close of the 1955–1959 window were among the final Guatemalan work to leave the London press under the Waterlow name.
