The Mahdist State operated its mint at Omdurman under extreme material constraints — copper and silver supplies were inconsistent, and billon alloys varied considerably from one striking to the next. This issue dates to the final years of Khalifa Abdallahi's rule, a period when the state was under mounting pressure from Anglo-Egyptian forces advancing from the north. Coinage production continued as a deliberate assertion of independent authority, even as the political situation deteriorated.

Omdurman fell to Kitchener in 1898, ending the Mahdist monetary system entirely.
