The United Arab Republic — the short-lived political union between Egypt and Syria proclaimed in 1958 — produced this issue during its third year of existence, when the project still carried genuine momentum. The two stars on the shield directly referenced the two constituent states. Syria's withdrawal in September 1961 rendered the symbolism obsolete almost immediately, though Egypt retained the UAR name until 1971.
