The Adelaide Assay Office operated for less than three years, from 1852 to 1853, producing gold pounds and two-pound pieces from Victorian goldfields metal before the colonial government shut it down under pressure from London, which resented the competition with Royal Mint branches. The original pattern five-pound pieces were struck in that brief window. This 1921 restrike — produced nearly seventy years later — was made from the original dies, which had survived in institutional custody.
The silver composition of this restrike distinguishes it immediately from the gold originals.
