Fred Goodwin signed this note as Finance Director of Clydesdale Bank before his move to Yorkshire Bank and, eventually, his catastrophic tenure at Royal Bank of Scotland. The signature here predates all of that by a decade — a minor biographical footnote that collectors occasionally notice.
Clydesdale printed its own notes in-house at Glasgow, one of the few Scottish banks to manage production without contracting a specialist security printer. The 1996 series relied on relatively modest security — watermark and thread only, at a moment when other issuers were already moving toward more layered anti-counterfeiting measures.
