Stephen Gooden was a distinguished wood engraver and book illustrator — an unusual choice for banknote work — whose involvement in the Helmeted Britannia design gave the series a distinctly classical gravity that set it apart from anything issued by the Bank before or since. Gooden died in 1955, meaning he did not live to see the notes enter circulation.
The series carried two chief cashier signatures across its run, O'Brien from 1957 and Hollom from 1961. O'Brien-signed examples are the more common; Hollom examples, issued across a shorter window before the series was withdrawn ahead of the 1963 Britannia replacement, are somewhat less frequently encountered in circulated grades.
