5 Pounds Northern Banking Company

The Northern Banking Company Limited was one of the smaller Irish joint-stock banks that survived into the twentieth century before being absorbed into the consolidating banking landscape of post-partition Ireland — it eventually merged into the National Bank in 1917, which gives this series its natural terminus. Notes issued in the final years before that merger are considerably harder to locate than earlier printings, since the bank was visibly winding down its independent note-issuing operations.

Irish provincial bank notes of this period frequently circulated far longer than their issue dates suggest, accepted on trust within established trade networks rather than redeemed promptly at branch.
