Northern Bank Limited was established in Belfast in 1824 and operated as a private commercial bank until its absorption into the Midland Bank group in 1965. The 1929 issue predates that acquisition by several decades and was circulating during a period when Northern Ireland's note-issuing commercial banks still operated with considerable independence from London oversight.
Pick 179 is among the scarcer Northern Bank issues — the bank's surviving paper from this period is thinly represented in collections, partly because wartime disruptions affected record-keeping and note redemption programs across Ulster's banking sector.
