The denomination FIVE POUNDS is rendered in bold letterpress, with the promise-to-pay text, issuing date of Edinburgh 16th September 1959, and the General Manager's manuscript signature positioned in the central field. |

The design is executed in deep green intaglio with the denomination £5 appearing in each upper corner. The printer's imprint of Waterlow & Sons Limited, London, runs along the lower margin. |
