Obverse description The note is printed in green and mauve tones with an intricate guilloche border framing the entire face. A large blank oval vignette occupies the upper left, intended for the cashier's stamp, while the bank's heraldic arms appear at the lower centre. The denomination FIVE POUNDS is rendered in bold letterpress, with the promise-to-pay text, issuing date of Edinburgh 16th September 1959, and the General Manager's manuscript signature positioned in the central field.

Reverse description The entire reverse is dominated by a finely engraved scenic vignette of the Forth Railway Bridge as seen from the south bank of the Firth of Forth, with a steam vessel passing beneath the cantilever spans and trees framing the composition on both sides. The design is executed in deep green intaglio with the denomination £5 appearing in each upper corner. The printer's imprint of Waterlow & Sons Limited, London, runs along the lower margin.
