The denomination FIVE POUNDS is inscribed in a curved legend at the upper portion of the poppy-shaped flan, while the lower arc bears the inscription 1914 · FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY · 1918. The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921, amalgamating four separate ex-servicemen's organizations that had formed in the immediate aftermath of the First World War. Jersey's commemorative program for the WWI centenary ran across multiple years and titles, this piece being among the gold-plated steel issues produced for broad retail distribution rather than collector-grade precious metal coinage.
