The Vickers Vimy completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919, when John Alcock and Arthur Brown flew from St. John's, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland in just over sixteen hours — ending the journey by nosing into a bog. Gibraltar's interest in the subject is not incidental: the aircraft flew over the territory during its crew's subsequent celebratory tour, and the Rock has long traded on its position at the crossroads of aviation and maritime history.
