The Vickers Vimy completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919, when John Alcock and Arthur Brown flew from St. John's, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland in just over sixteen hours — ending the journey by nosing into a bog. Gibraltar's interest in the subject is not incidental: the aircraft flew over the territory during its crew's subsequent celebratory tour, and the Rock has long traded on its position at the crossroads of aviation and maritime history.
The 2008 date places this within a dense run of Gibraltar commemorative silver issues targeting the thematic collector market.
