A D-class Royal Navy submarine — identified by the hull designation D4 — is shown surfaced and underway amid churning, textured waves rendered in fine relief. In the foreground, three torpedoes and a wheeled trolley used for loading ordnance are arranged prominently, emphasising the technological innovation of submarine warfare. The engraver's initials EE appear discreetly in the lower-central field. The inscription 1914 THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1918 arcs along the left side and base of the design in bold sans-serif capitals. |
