Part of a broader British and Channel Islands commemorative push in the early 2000s honoring railway workers, this issue celebrates the signalman's role at a moment when that profession had largely vanished from British infrastructure — rail privatization and automated signaling through the 1980s and 1990s had made the manual signal box essentially obsolete by the time this coin was struck.
Guernsey has no railway of its own; the last narrow-gauge line on the island closed in 1934.
