| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in the fourth definitive portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. The Queen is depicted with a draped bust, her likeness finely detailed against a mirror-field proof surface. The legend ELIZABETH II BAILIWICK OF JERSEY arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 2009 and the engraver's initials IRB appearing below the portrait. |

James Cook's three Pacific voyages, conducted between 1768 and 1779, were as much scientific expeditions as naval ones — the first carried astronomers to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus for the Royal Society. Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay in February 1779 during his third voyage, in a confrontation over a stolen cutter that escalated badly. Jersey issued this piece as part of a broader sea exploration commemorative program popular with Commonwealth mints in the late 2000s, when the market for themed silver proofs was at a particular peak.
