Additional information

James Cook's three Pacific voyages, conducted between 1768 and 1779, were as much scientific expeditions as naval ones — the first carried astronomers to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus for the Royal Society. Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay in February 1779 during his third voyage, in a confrontation over a stolen cutter that escalated badly. Jersey issued this piece as part of a broader sea exploration commemorative program popular with Commonwealth mints in the late 2000s, when the market for themed silver proofs was at a particular peak.
