Beschrijving keerzijde The central device displays the quartered Royal Arms shield in fine heraldic detail, depicting the three passant guardant lions of England in the first and fourth quarters, the rampant lion of Scotland in the second quarter, and the Irish harp in the third quarter. Surmounting the shield is the Royal Cypher E II R beneath a Tudor crown. Flanking the shield are a laurel branch to the left and an oak branch to the right, symbolising peace and strength. The arc legend SAPPHIRE ANNIVERSARY curves along the upper field, and the dates 1953 – 2018 appear in the lower exergue, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Queen's coronation. The engraver's initials ST appear to the lower right of the shield.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued to mark Elizabeth II's 65th anniversary of accession — the sapphire jubilee, a milestone with no meaningful royal precedent in British history, as no previous monarch had reached it. Victoria came closest, dying in her 64th year on the throne. The Royal Mint commissioned James Butler's effigy for the obverse, one of several portrait updates during Elizabeth's reign that remain a point of quiet controversy among collectors who track the evolving coinage portraits across decades.
