John Fisher's appointment as First Sea Lord in 1904 triggered the most radical restructuring of the Royal Navy since the Napoleonic Wars. His obsession with speed and firepower produced HMS Dreadnought in 1906 — built in just 366 days and instantly rendering every other battleship in the world obsolete, including Britain's own fleet.
Jersey's place in this series is largely ceremonial, but Fisher was a figure of genuine controversy: forced from office in 1915 after his public resignation over the Gallipoli campaign, he never held command again.
