Gibraltar's 2014 commemorative program marking the WWI centenary split the conflict into thematic domains — land, sea, and air — issuing each as a separate piece. The air issue acknowledges Britain's Royal Flying Corps, which entered the war in August 1914 with fewer than 200 aircraft and pilots who were, by any measure, improvising doctrine as they went. Fixed armament on aircraft didn't exist at the outbreak; observers carried rifles and revolvers.
KM#1516 is part of a matched set, and collectors assembling the complete series often find the air piece the last to surface.
