Alderney's commemorative program has long served as a vehicle for British cultural subjects that fall outside the Royal Mint's remit, and this piece marking the Morgan Plus Four fits that pattern. The Morgan Motor Company, founded in 1909 in Malvern Link, Worcestershire, is one of the few remaining hand-built car manufacturers in the world — and the Plus Four, introduced in 1950, has remained in near-continuous production ever since, making the centenary a legitimate milestone for the marque if not always for the coinage.
Morgan's survival through the postwar decades owed something to a waiting list that at times stretched to ten years.
