At the centre of the cross sits the shield of the Order of the Garter, bearing the Garter motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE encircling the arms. The date in Roman numerals ANNO DOM MDCCCXLVII and the motto TUEATUR UNITA DEUS appear in the surrounding legend, with the engraver's initials W W attributed to William Wyon present in the design, faithfully recreating the celebrated reverse of the 1847 Gothic Crown. |
