Gibraltar's commemorative program in the early 2000s produced a string of World War II themed issues aimed squarely at the collector market, and this is one of them. The Battle of Stalingrad — fought between August 1942 and February 1943 — resulted in roughly two million casualties across both sides and marked the definitive turning point on the Eastern Front.
