| Obverse description | The left panel carries the bank arms as a vertical vignette flanked by medallions, with a central circular seal overlaid in blue on the promissory text. At the top centre, a heraldic vignette of two classical figures flanking the bank arms is set between two dark cartouches bearing the denomination FIVE in white lettering. The issue place EDINBURGH and date 7 APRIL 1955 appear at upper right, with the serial number, Governor and Treasurer signatures, and the denomination £5 repeated at lower left and right. |

George Waterston & Sons printed for Bank of Scotland throughout much of the twentieth century from their Edinburgh operation — one of the few cases where a major Scottish bank's notes were produced domestically rather than by Bradbury Wilkinson or De La Rue. The tight signature date ranges here are worth attention: three distinct signing dates clustered within the first three days of March 1955 under Elphinstone and Watson suggest a single controlled issue batch, possibly tied to a scheduled release rather than routine rolling production.
The transition to Craig and Watson signatures beginning 6 April reflects a change at the senior level mid-series, with Watson retained across both pairings.
