Obverse description Two robed classical allegorical figures of Hibernia are seated at left and right, each beside a decorative pillar, flanking a large central circular guilloche vignette enclosing a Medusa-like female face in intaglio overlaid with the bold numeral '5' in letterpress; the issuing place 'Belfast' and date appear beneath within the guilloche frame. A repeating frieze of female heads in relief runs along the upper margin, with the bank title 'Bank of Ireland' in ornate script across the upper central field.
