Obverse description Two robed classical allegorical figures of Hibernia are seated at left and right, each beside a decorative pillar, flanking a large central circular guilloche vignette enclosing a Medusa-like female face in intaglio overlaid with the bold numeral '5' in letterpress; the issuing place 'Belfast' and date appear beneath within the guilloche frame. A repeating frieze of female heads in relief runs along the upper margin, with the bank title 'Bank of Ireland' in ornate script across the upper central field.

Reverse description Printed entirely in rose-red on a pale ground, the reverse centres on a circular guilloche medallion enclosing an intaglio vignette of an allegorical female figure accompanied by two children, rendered in fine line work. Two oval panels bearing the numeral '5' in bold letterpress are set within intricate lathe-work guilloche borders at left and right of the central medallion, with 'FIVE POUNDS' inscribed within the medallion border and 'FIVE' in large letterpress text along the lower margins.
