A helmeted Egyptian soldier in profile faces right, holding a flagstaff topped with a pennant; the Eagle of Saladin appears on his helmet. Behind the soldier, a large stylized crescent forms the background. To the left of the central device, wavy lines represent the Suez Canal crossing, while to the right, an upward-pointing arrow overlays a section of the Bar-Lev Line rendered as a brick fortification, symbolising the Egyptian breakthrough. An olive branch in low relief appears at the lower left. Egypt's October War — the 1973 crossing of the Suez Canal — carried enormous political weight domestically, reframing the military humiliation of 1967 and providing Sadat's government with a narrative of restored national dignity. This commemorative was issued on the twentieth anniversary, by which point Sadat himself had been dead for over a decade, assassinated in 1981.
