Fiji's Currency Board was established in 1914, but high-denomination notes like this 5 Pounds were primarily instruments of intercolonial trade and government settlement rather than everyday commerce — ordinary Fijians rarely handled paper currency of this value. Bradbury Wilkinson produced the plates, as they did for a large portion of British colonial Pacific issues in this period.
The three-signature format, requiring both local signatories and the Commissioner of Currency, reflects the Board's accountability structure under Crown oversight. A.A. Wright served as a consistent signatory across both years of this issue, suggesting continuity through what was otherwise a turbulent period for commodity-dependent colonial economies in the mid-1930s depression years.
