The Standard Bank operated branches across British Southern Africa under a single issuing authority, but branch-specific notes like this Salisbury example were a genuine operational necessity — Rhodesia's commercial infrastructure in 1916 was thin enough that local paper had to function independently of Johannesburg. Waterlow & Sons handled the printing, as they did for much of the bank's regional series, working from plate designs that saw reuse across multiple denominations and branches with only the branch name and signatory details altered.

Salisbury branch issues at this denomination are genuinely scarce. The five-pound face value limited everyday circulation to commercial transactions, and wartime conditions in 1916 meant fewer notes were issued and less were preserved.
