Obverse description Blue and brown intaglio-printed note with an elaborate guilloche border. At left, a vignette of a male settler figure labelled 'SOUTH AFRICA', and at right an allegorical female figure with agricultural implements and livestock; a central panel carries the denomination cartouche 'FIVE POUNDS' in brown letterpress. The heading reads 'THE STANDARD BANK OF SOUTH AFRICA LIMITED' with 'SALISBURY BRANCH' and place of payment 'SALISBURY' inscribed below, dated 1st December 1916 by order of the Board of Directors.

Reverse description Printed entirely in blue-green, the reverse centres on a large circular guilloche medallion enclosing a finely engraved portrait bust of an allegorical female figure wearing a diadem. Flanking the central medallion are two architectural vignettes: the Cape Town branch at left and the Johannesburg branch at right, each set within ornate scroll work. The bank title 'THE STANDARD BANK OF SOUTH AFRICA LIMITED' arcs around the central medallion, with the numeral '5' repeated in each upper corner.
