Obverse description The obverse is engraved in green and black on white paper, with a central guilloche band carrying the bold intaglio inscription FIVE POUNDS. Above the band, a central vignette presents the royal arms flanked by two allegorical female figures, below the legend INCORPORATED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT. The denomination numeral 5 appears in elaborate quatrefoil frames at both upper corners, while lower-left and lower-right vignettes depict equestrian statues beside classical architectural backdrops; the note bears a manuscript date of 2nd April 1867 to the upper right and is overprinted SPECIMEN.
