Andreas Macher was a master mason (*Maurermeister*) operating in Nürnberg who issued this zinc token as private emergency currency — almost certainly during the acute small-change shortage that gripped German cities in the early Notgeld period around 1917–1921. Tradesmen and craftsmen issuing their own scrip was unusual even by Notgeld standards; most private issues came from merchants, innkeepers, or cooperative societies rather than individual building contractors.
